Gente!, soy yo escribiendo por primera vez desde este rincón de andazas de por aquí y por allá..... hoy les paso el dato de uno de los lugares más bellos en los que he estado..... Islas Palomino en las afueras del Callao, Perú.
Guys!, it's me posting for the first time in this corner of stories about adventures around here and there..... today I have a good one, this is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been..... Palomino Islands offshore Callao, Peru.
Este conjunto de islas, las cuales aparentemente pertenecen a la porción submarina de la Cordillera de la Costa (rocas del Paleozoico y/o Mesozoico, por lo menos unos 70 millones de años) que se extinde desde el norte del Perú en las Islas Lobos de Afuera hasta las Islas San Gallán en el sur costa afuera de Paracas aproximadamente, están caracterizadas por una abundancia de lobos marinos y pingüinos del Humboldt.
These islands, which apparently belong to the submarine portion of the Coastal Cordillera (Paleozoic/Mezosoic rocks, at least 70 Mega-annum [Ma]) extending approximately from the Lobos de Afuera Island in the northern Peru to the San Gallan Islands offshore Paracas in the southern Peru, are characterized by an abundance of seawolves and Humboldt penguins.
Entre la década de los 1950's y 1960's, cuando la anchoveta se convirtió en uno de las principales actividades económicas de la industria Peruana, esta zona estaba cubierta por una enorme, y hasta gigantesca según algunas historias, cantidad de aves que generaban el preciado guano. He oído muchas historias de cómo estas islas y las islas alrededor estaban completamente cubiertos por guano. Sin embargo, el pensamiento de "na' q ver, ese pescado nunca se va acabar", así como los fenómenos oceanográficos anómalos como El Niño, han provocado durante tres décadas una merma importante en las poblaciones de aves en esta zona.
Between the decade of 1950s and 1960s, when the Peruvian Anchovy became one of the main economic activities of the Peruvian industry, this zone was covered by a huge, and some stories point to gigantic, amounts of sea birds where their droppings composed the valuable guano. I've heard many stories about how these islands, and their surroundings, were fully covered by guano. However, fishery's people thoughts about "come on dude, don't worry at all, that amount of fish will never cease...", as well as the anomalous oceanographic phenomena such as El Niño, during three decades have been the reason of one of the biggest decreases of sea bird populations in this zone.
La buena noticia es que aún existe una belleza incomparable en esta zona que tienen que visitar y cuidar. Gracias al excelente trabajo del Ministerio, esta zona es una Reserva Nacional, buen trabajo muchachos, muchas gracias y felicitaciones!. Es impresionante el sonido de "bienvenida" que dan los lobos marinos cuando uno se acerca al islote llamado "hotel", es realmente sobrecogedor. Yo no me negé cuando me preguntaron: ¿quieres bañarte con los lobos?.. pero "clarinete saxofón!" y en una me lanzé (amor & paz ;)p), ahí les tiro una foto con los primos de mi causa Omar.
Fortunately, this beautiful place is still preserved with marine life, place where you guys have to visit and care about. Thanks to the excellent work of the Minister, this zone is a National Reserve, good job guys! thank you so much and congratulations!. It's impressive how seawolves receive people with a strong "welcome" when they approach to the small island called "hotel", it's really an overwhelming experience. When someone asked me: do you want to swim with the seawolves?.. I said "but of course!" and jumped from the boat to the ocean, here it's a photo of me with them (peace & love ;)p), Omar's cousins as I say.
El agua aquí es refrescantemente fría, esta zona tiene temperaturas superficiales que oscilan entre 12ºC y 14ºC generalmente. Las corrientes marinas son generalmente fuertes, probablemente ocurra un efecto embudo entre las islas que intensificaría la fuerza de las corrientes en esta zona. Las profundidades de columna de agua varían entre 30 y 50 metros, y lo que una vez me dijo el gran Fico, esta zona al parecer no presenta importantes acumulaciones de sedimentos finos (probablemente tampoco gruesos), lo cual soporta la idea de una intensa acción de las corrientes en toda la columna de agua. Callao, así como el mar Peruano, es una importante zona de afloramientos costeros, también conocidos como surgencias costeras, los cuales generan uno de los sistemas de productividad primaria más importantes del mundo. Aún así, no hay mucha gente interesada en el mar... el interés solamente va en sacar peces. Saben, hay mucho interés extranjero (claramente, financiamiento real) en estudiar el porqué ocurre esto y lo que genera, pero el interés tiene que ser exageradamente mayor por las autoridades locales, los estudiantes locales tienen que estar ahí para aprovechar las oportunidades que aparezcan, algunos sabemos esto y vamos para allá.
The seawater here is refreshingly cold, the temperature in the sea surface varies between 12ºC and 14ºC generally. Sea currents here are generally intense, probably because a funnel effect created by the islands, so their strength will increase around this zone. Water depths vary between 30 and 50 meters, and what the wise Fico told me once, this zone seemingly does not have important accumulations of fine-grain sediments (neither coarse sediments), which supports the idea of an intense action of the sea currents in the whole water column. Callao, as well as the Peruvian Sea, is a strong coastal upwelling zone where one of the highest primary productivity systems worldwide take place. Nevertheless, few people are interested in studying the sea... they're just interested in the fish. You know, international scientific communities in fact have a real interest (clearly, available funding) in understanding why such high primary productivity occurs offshore Peru and what it generates, but this interest must come greatly from local authorities. Local students must be there to take advantage of the resulting opportunities, some of them are aware of that and we're going under such pathway.
